01: The Insight

A Motivation Problem, Not a Content Problem

The platform had strong content but suffered from low engagement. Our initial research ruled out content quality and pointed to a lack of motivation as the reason students dropped off, so the fix wasn't more lessons, it was a reason to come back.

Initial screens: a static video player and a flat subject-grid home screen, the Library model. Revamped screens: a personalised video feed with Continue Watching and Recommended For You, based on your knowledge gap, the Journey model.
From a flat subject library to a personalised, feed-driven Journey
02: The Strategy

Character-Led Gamification

I replaced the "Library" model with a "Journey" model, introducing and designing "Afri," a character who guides students and turns learning into a gamified journey rather than a flat list of lessons. The character was later adopted as the company's brand identity, scaling to 4 million+ users across West Africa.

AfriLearn gamification implementation: character-led reward cards for lesson completion and streak milestones, a lesson-summary score screen, and a top-percentile assessment result.

03: Execution

Redesigning for Scale

Working closely with the founding team and overseeing the Product Lead, I redesigned the information architecture to handle a massive content library, subject mastery, past exam practice, video lessons and coding classes, without overwhelming the user.

04: AI Experience

The AskAfri AI Experience

Optimised for low-bandwidth environments across Africa while maintaining an immersive, app-like feel, I designed the LLM-powered "Chat with Afri" experience: its persona, tone, and conversational flow, so it feels responsive rather than scripted.
